Confederate

Brooke, Sub-pattern II

DIAMETER:  4.56 inches
GUN: Rifled and banded 12-pounder Smoothbore, 4.62-inch Caliber
LENGTH: 8 1/2 inches
WEIGHT:  About 21 pounds, 8 ounces
CONSTRUCTION: Common Shell
SABOT: Copper, Brooke ratchet disc
FUZING: Wooden Fuze Plug

A very interesting projectile showing an early development stage in the Brooke ratchet system.  This specimen does not have true ratchets, instead three very broad flanges fit into matching notches in the projectile base.  The sabot is quite thick, 15/32ds of an inch.   The sabot, which is secured by a center bolt was probably too thick to expand properly.
