James Pattern II

Federal James Pattern II

Charles T. James patented this projectile on June 10, 1862, patent #35,521, as an improvement on his Pattern I.  The specimen above is a James Pattern II projectile based on the date of the patent.  In the field, the bursting cavity proved to be too small, resulting in poor fragmentation upon detonation.  A large number of the James Pattern II projectiles have been recovered from the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi.  Go here for additional remarks and a complete specimen.
