A. H. Emery patented this unusual projectile on March 17, 1863, patent #37,906.  He patented a fuze for the shell version of his projectile on December 8, 1863, patent #40,828.  It had a brass ring sabot that was attached to the projectile after casting.  This pattern is extremely rare, and no battlefield finds have been noted to date.
