This is an example of a Read-Parrott pattern projectile with a high, thin copper sabot. Most specimens of this pattern have been recovered from battlefields near Atlanta, Georgia, such as the 1864 Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. The projectile base has a lathe dimple and is slightly rounded. This style of Read-Parrott was manufactured at the Atlanta Arsenal located in Atlanta, Georgia. This pictured projectile was manufactured for use in the 10-pounder (2.9-inch caliber) Parrott rifle. The 10-pounder (2.9-inch caliber) Parrott rifle at an elevation of 15 degrees had a flight time of 16 seconds and had a range of 4,100 yards.
