LENGTH: 8 1/4 inches

FUZING: Wooden fuze plug, paper time fuze

The interior of this Broun sub-pattern projectile is cast with lines-of-weakness in the pattern of a six-sided prism. Upon detonation, the shell was designed to break into twenty-four fragments, plus the nose and base. This pictured projectile was recovered near the site of its manufacture, the Selma Arsenal in Alabama. Note the projectile has only one raised bearing ring which is located in the middle of the projectile. This location of the bearing surface is unusual for Broun manufactured projectiles; typically the bourrelet is located closer to the nose. Other examples of this sub-pattern have been recovered from Johnsonville and Shiloh, Tennessee. To learn more about the inventor click here.
