Hotchkiss

DIAMETER: 2.94 inches
GUN: 3-inch wrought iron (ordnance) rifle
LENGTH: 6 5/16 inches
WEIGHT: 9 pounds 8 ounces
CONSTRUCTION: Shell
SABOT: Lead band
FUZING: Hotchkiss brass fuze plug, paper time fuze

This unfired Hotchkiss projectile is of a late-war production. The flat nose is fitted with a standard brass Hotchkiss time fuze plug. The body of the shell has three flame grooves which aided the propellant flame in reaching the paper time fuze. The slightly rounded base cup does not have the Hotchkiss patent date cast into it, as is commonly seen in other earlier production Hotchkiss projectiles. Specimens have been recovered in Nashville, Tennessee, and at Spanish Fort, Alabama.
