The Hotchkiss projectile pictured has an iron anvil cap percussion fuze that is thought to be first used at West Point, New York, on its test range for artillery projectiles and cannon and is commonly referred to as a West Point type percussion fuze. Percussion Hotchkiss projectiles were manufactured without flame grooves since they were designed to detonate on impact.  This projectile was recovered from Vicksburg, Mississippi.
