Ordnance officer and inventor
Alexander Brydie Dyer was a professional ordnance officer who commanded the Springfield Armory, greatly expanding its output of small arms, before becoming Chief of Ordnance of the United States Army in 1864. In that post he directed Federal ordnance supply through the closing year of the war.
He also lent his name to the Dyer projectile, a rifled projectile with a lead base sabot used in the field artillery.
