Firing from cover

A casemate carriage carried a heavy gun within a casemate, a vaulted masonry chamber, so that it fired out through an embrasure while the gun and crew stayed protected behind the wall. The carriage traversed on rails to shift the gun within the embrasure's arc.

The casemate gave shelter that the barbette lacked, but the embrasure confined its fire to a narrow angle, so forts combined casemate and barbette guns to balance protection and coverage.
