Carrying the round

The gunner's haversack was a leather pouch in which a crewman carried a single round, the projectile and its powder cartridge, from the ammunition chest at the limber or caisson forward to the muzzle of the gun.

Carrying rounds one at a time in the haversack kept loose powder and cartridges away from the flame at the muzzle, a precaution in the careful choreography of serving a gun.
