Projectile and fuze inventor

John P. Schenkl was an American inventor whose name is attached to a family of Civil War ordnance: the Schenkl projectile, with its tapered body and papier-mache sabot, and the Schenkl combination and percussion fuzes.

His projectiles and fuzes were used in the Federal rifled artillery, and surviving examples are a familiar part of the record of Civil War rifled ammunition.
