Testing the guns
The Sandy Hook Proving Ground, on the New Jersey shore at the entrance to New York Harbor, was established by the United States Army in the years after the Civil War as a place to test heavy guns, carriages, and projectiles under service conditions.
It became a principal proving ground for American ordnance in the decades of transition to steel, breech-loading, and rifled heavy guns.
