Confederate ordnance center
Selma, Alabama, grew into one of the Confederacy's most important ordnance and industrial centers. The Confederate Naval Ordnance Works there cast heavy Brooke rifles and other guns, working alongside the Tredegar Iron Works as a principal source of Southern heavy ordnance.
The importance of the Selma works made them a target, and their capture and destruction late in the war removed a key part of Confederate arms production.
