The Confederacy's ironworks
The Tredegar Iron Works at Richmond was the largest ironworks in the Confederacy and the mainstay of Southern heavy-ordnance production. It cast cannon of many kinds, among them the banded Brooke rifles and heavy columbiads, and supplied projectiles, plate, and other war material.
Its output made Richmond a center of Confederate arms manufacture and one of the reasons the city was so strategically important throughout the war.
