An enduring arsenal
The Watervliet Arsenal, on the Hudson opposite Troy, New York, was among the oldest of the United States arsenals. In the Civil War it manufactured and stored ammunition, harness, and the many stores and equipments an army in the field required.
In the decades after the war it grew into one of the nation's chief makers of heavy cannon, a role it long retained.
