Career
William LeRoy Broun was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, in 1827 and educated at the University of Virginia, where he graduated in 1850. He taught mathematics in Mississippi and at the University of Georgia before the war and rose to lieutenant colonel in the Ordnance Department of the Confederate army, with responsibility that included the Richmond Arsenal.
Broun made a number of ordnance improvements during his service. After the war he returned to teaching, serving as a professor and later as a university president in Georgia and Alabama.
