Projectiles of this
pattern are named after their attributed site of manufacture: Selma Arsenal in
Selma, Alabama. In the groove between the high copper sabot and the cylindrical
portion of the projectile body can be seen remnants of a hemp-like material. This
material was originally greased, thus serving as a lubricant for the cannon bore.
