18-pounder Blakely Shell

Some 18-pounder, (4-inch caliber) Blakely projectiles were fired by the Confederate artillery during the defenses of Charleston, South Carolina. It was used only by the Confederate forces, and even then in extremely limited quantities. On Tuesday, September 15, 1863, Edward Manigault's journal entry stated "Fired also 4 Shell with the 4in. Blakely Gun. The results were unsatisfactory. The projectiles flew very wildly. Elevations 13, 14, 15, & 16 1/2 [degrees]."
