This pattern was patented by Charles
Tillinghast James and due to its patent date, June 10, 1862, patent #35,521, this projectile is
classified as a James Pattern II projectile. The majority of these projectiles have been
recovered from the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi. This James pattern has eight
vertical flanges on the projectile body. The sabot is made of lead that has been
cast-in between these flanges. The exterior of the sabot is covered with a thin tin sleeve
and canvas to help prevent the lead from fouling the bore of the rifled cannon. The fired
James Pattern II projectiles are often recovered with the lead sabot intact.
