12-pounder CS Lead Side-loader

Commonly called a lead side-loader ball, this type of projectile was commonly used in the Virginia campaigns.   The lead-side loader plug sealed the hole through which the iron case-shot balls had been inserted.  Iron balls were used due to the shortage of lead, which was needed for small arms ammunition.  It is also found in the following calibers: 6-pounder (3.67-inch) and 24-pounder (5.82-inch) side-loaders. Click here for a cross section.
