Cross-Sections Of Artillery Projectiles

The projectiles in this section have been sawn in half by professionals using remote equipment. A special thanks goes to Corky Huey, Howard Alligood, Jr., and Andy Rice for their invaluable assistance in providing all in the hobby with this rare glimpse of the inner workings of artillery projectiles. Under no circumstances should this be attempted by anyone without the proper training and equipment necessary to perform this life-threatening task safely.

The authors do not encourage the reader to perform this work nor hold themselves responsible for anyone attempting to saw, drill or cut into a projectile.  For an interesting article in the September 24, 1864 issue of Scientific American where two soldiers used artillery projectiles as cooking supports that exploded click here.

This section is intended to give the reader a better understanding of the construction, design, and purpose of Civil War artillery projectiles. Various elements of the projectiles will be numbered and descriptions provided. In addition, the reader will be referred to other sections for more information. A review of the glossary section would be helpful in understanding the terms used.
