Charles W. Stafford of New York, patented this projectile on December 20, 1864, patent #45,567.  The brass disk sabot has three corresponding flanges that fit into three grooves on the tapered iron base of the projectile.  The brass disk is affixed to the base of the projectile with a six-sided bolt.  There are no known battlefield recoveries of this variety.
